Yes. Spooled Heat Tape Pro is made to be cut to the exact length of your project. Just be sure to use the correct Radiant Solutions kits for connections and terminations so the system stays safe, waterproof and code-compliant.

How do I terminate field-installed Heat Tape Pro de-icing cable?

You’ll need a Radiant Solutions End Seal Kit. We offer two options: Our traditional shrink-tube style kit or the GlowCap End Seal Kit which has a green LED indicator that shows the run is energized. Both are waterproof, UL-rated and easy to install.

How do I connect self-regulating heat cable to power?

Bulk Heat Tape Pro heat cable must be hardwired into a junction box using our Hardwire Connection Kit. This kit maintains UL compliance and provides a sealed, long-term connection.

Should I use 120V or 240V cable?

Accepted Answer

The best choice depends on the electrical system already on site. For shorter runs, 120V works well. For longer runs or when the panel and wiring are set up for it 240V is more efficient. Always size your design based on available circuits, breaker sizes and the total load.

What’s the difference between 6W/ft and 8W/ft Heat Tape Pro bulk cable?

Accepted Answer

6W/ft is standard for most roof and gutter applications and has been used successfully in all markets around the United States to prevent snow and ice issues for both roof and gutter applications. 8W/ft provides more output, which can be useful in extreme climates or heavy snow conditions. The trade-off is higher energy consumption.

How long of a heat tape run can I put on one circuit?

Accepted Answer

Extremely low start temperatures, breaker characteristics, long runs and voltage drop may require shorter lengths, but here are some basic guidelines. On a 30A breaker:
120V, 6 watt per foot system: Up to about 226 feet of heat cable
240V 6 watt per foot system: up to about 451 feet of heat cable
240V 8 watt per foot system: up to about 415 feet of heat cable

Can spooled heat tape overlap or touch itself?

Yes. The self-regulating core in Heat Tape Pro prevents overheating so it’s safe if two runs cross or touch. This makes installation around valleys, gutters and downspouts faster and simpler.

How long will Heat Tape Pro heat cable last?

Accepted Answer

The warranty on Heat Tape Pro bulk cable is 10 years but the cable is designed to last far beyond that in the field. With proper installation most systems will far outlive the warranty period.

What accessories do I need besides connection and end kits?

Accepted Answer

At minimum, you’ll need the correct roof clips to secure the cable. We manufacture more than 20 clip styles for every roof type. Many contractors also add Cable Guard for high-traffic areas and controllers like ThermaCord to reduce energy use.

Can the Heat Tape Pro heat cable be repaired if it’s damaged on site?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If it’s nicked by a tool or chewed by a squirrel, you can repair it with a Radiant Solutions repair kit. No need to replace the entire run.

How do I protect cable on metal roofs with snow slides?

Accepted Answer

Use snow retention devices like snow fence and snow guards above the cable runs to prevent ice and snow from tearing the system off the roof. We can help with clip selection and layout design for these conditions.

Accepted Answer

Yes. All our spool cables are UL-listed and tested for safety. Using our approved kits keeps the system compliant with code and inspection requirements.

Can I use Heat Tape Pro cable for pipe freeze protection too?

Accepted Answer

Of course. Heat Tape Pro bulk cable can be used on pipes. It's particularly well suited for applications in extreme conditions where slightly high operating temperatures are required.

Do I need a controller to run my heat cable system?

Accepted Answer

Not required, but strongly recommended. Bulk self-regulating heat cable adjusts its output automatically according to surrounding temperatures but it doesn’t shut completely off if the system is energized. A controller like our DS8 or DS9 will power the system on only when temperatures drop below freezing, saving energy and extending cable life. These controllers also have moisture sensors which add a layer of additional control for situations where temperatures are cold but no snow or ice are present.

Can contractors buy in bulk?

Heat Tape Pro self-regulating heat tape automatically increases its heat output when temperatures drop and decreases output when it's warmer. This means the cable never overheats, uses less electricity during milder weather, and provides reliable ice dam prevention without the risk of burning out like cheaper alternatives.
