Cable Guard is a UV-resistant flexible PVC extrusion with an inner aluminum core designed to quickly snap onto any cable that is 5-6mm thick by 8-13mm wide. It provides protection against many common forms of damage including cuts, punctures and abrasions. It is simple to install and remove and requires no tools. Cable Guard can be cut with a standard tin snips if needed. Common applications include using Cable Guard to protect cable as it makes its transition into the gutter downspout, where cable is exposed on the bottom of the downspout system, where cable comes into contact with any sharp edge and where cable passes through sheet metal, such as through Leaf Guard, Gutter Helmet and other metal gutter screens.

Measuring is not difficult and you can make measurements without going up on your roof or using a ladder if you err on the side of overestimating the distances. Including a thermostatic heat tape switch or controller in your installation will cut power to your heat tape in times it is not needed. This will lessen your environmental footprint and save you money.
Savings will always depend on the weather and how often you have temperatures above the threshold that the switch turns on your heat cable. In most situations where heat cable is needed, savings will offset the cost of the ThermaCord and then some.

And if you are using Heat Tape Pro on your roof / eave to resolve an ice dam issue, you should use heat tape to make sure there’s a clear path through your gutters for water to escape your roof. If you don’t do that, the water could just refreeze in your gutters. You also want to get the downspouts too.
