Grip Clips .625

The Grip Clip™- An innovation in securing your Ice Dam Heat Tape

No other Ice Dam Heat Tape roof clip can be installed as quickly as Radiant Solutions Grip Clip™. With no tools required, the Grip Clip can be placed and repositioned in seconds. Using it’s patented design, the Grip Clip can sturdily hold your Heat Tape without the need to put holes in your roof shingles –something that can nullify the warranty on some roofs.

The Advantages of Grip Clip

Grip Clips’ unique design also allows for certain Ice Dam Heat Tape configurations that are very difficult –or even impossible– to achieve with regular ice dam roof clips. One example of this is getting the heat tape to align deep into a roof valley, a common area on roofs for ice dams to form.

Additionally, when doing a full Heat Tape install with Grip Clips, you will generally require less clips then when using standard ice dam heat tap roof clips. This is because the design of the Grip Clip allows for only a single clip on the bottom trough of your heat tape zig-zag, instead of two clips (one on each side of the bottom).

Grip Clips .625 FAQs

What types of roofs can I use Grip Clip 625 on?

Grip Clip 625 is designed for thicker roofing materials with a thickness between 3/8" and 5/8". That includes cedar shingles, tapersawn cedar shakes and popular synthetic slates like DaVinci. For thinner asphalt shingles, use Grip Clip 325. For really thick roofing up to 7/8", use Grip Clip 875.

How many Grip Clips do I need for a typical roof and gutter heat cable project?

Plan for one clip at each bottom “V” in your zig-zag pattern and additional clips every 2 feet along the top and bottom of your zig-zag runs. Our Heat Tape Calculator provides a good estimate for your layout. For valleys, figure about 6 Grip Clips to run cable up and down each valley, spaced roughly 30–36" apart.

How do Grip Clips attach without nails or screws?

Grip Clip 625 is designed with a body that acts as a toothy pincher. Two opposing arms of corrosion-resistant anodized aluminum grip tightly when slid into place. The barbs bite into the roofing surface securely without causing any damage.

Will Grip Clips damage my roof or void the warranty?

No. While nail-on clips puncture shingles (because they’re nailed, duh) Grip Clips lock onto the shingle roofing with no penetrations, protecting both the roof and the warranty.

Do I need tools to install Grip Clips?

Not for Grip Clips 625 of 875 because they’re designed for thicker roofing materials and those materials don't have glue strips. To remove Grip Clips all you do is lift the arms and wiggle the clip out.

Can I reuse Grip Clips if I move my system?

Not recommended. Once removed, the aluminum usually loses its ability to firmly bite into the shingle. For best performance, use new clips.

What size shingles does Grip Clip 625 fit?

The “625” refers to the clip’s mouth height. Grip Clip 625 fits shingles between 3/8" and 5/8" thick. For thinner roofing, use 325 and for roofing up to 7/8" thick use 875.

What are Grip Clips made from?

Grip Clips are made from 5052 aluminum alloy, selected for its spring strength, corrosion resistance and ability to handle extreme freeze–thaw conditions.

Can I use Grip Clips in gutters or downspouts?

No. Grip Clips are designed for roofing applications only.

What’s the advantage of Grip Clips over standard nail-on clips?

They eliminate penetrations. Each clip holds cable firmly (minimum of 25 pounds of pull force) without creating holes that can void warranties. Install speed is also faster since no drilling or nailing is required.

Can Grip Clips be used in roof valleys?

Yes. Grip Clips allow you to place heat cable closer to the centerline of the valley, where ice dams typically form. This improves melt-path performance without nails or adhesives.

How long will Grip Clips last?

Many years. The aluminum alloy resists corrosion and weathering, ensuring long-term reliability.

How quickly can I get my Grip Clips for my ice dam prevention project?

We keep them in stock and ship same day from Minnesota, don’t ‘cha know (assuming you don’t order too late in the day!). Orders placed over the weekend will ship the next business day.

Where can I find the specs on Grip Clips used for roof de-icing jobs?

General FAQs

PipeFreezePRO comes with one or more 30ft rolls of high-quality fiberglass tape, but you can use any tape with a temperature rating of 150º F and above. Self-adhesive aluminum foil tape can be used but avoid standard tapes, including electrical tape and duct tape because they lose their adhesion when exposed to heat. Remember, it’s imperative to cover the pipe/heat tape assembly with pipe insulation (1/2″ minimum thickness). Think four easy steps: 1) cable on pipe, 2) tape on cable, 3) insulation on pipe/cable and 4) tape on insulation.

Totally.

Pipe Freeze PRO can be overlapped during installation. This is a fundamental advantage of self-regulating heat cable over cheap, constant wattage cable found in hardware stores is that it can be overlapped without risk of shorting out or catching fire. So yes, overlap away!

The amount of heat cable needed for pipe freeze prevention is determined by a couple of simple factors including: Length of pipe, diameter of pipe, distance to power supply and number of valves.

Most of the time, we do not recommend a spiral cable application because it’s simply not necessary. It requires 3x the cable to do the same job.

Therefore, simply use a straight, single run of cable affixed to the bottom of the pipe (think 6 o’clock position) using the provided fiberglass installation tape. Next, add 1 foot of cable for every valve because you will be wrapping the valve with cable. For pipes less than 1″ in diameter, a single cable run is sufficient. For larger pipes, two cable runs are recommended. Keep in mind that plastic pipes are less thermally conductive so you may choose to use two cable runs on larger plastic pipes to be safe. Finally, if your outlet isn’t close to the pipe you are treating, factor in enough heat cable to reach your outlet (Pipe Freeze PRO does come with a 36″ power cord).

Finally, you must install insulation on your pipe and heat cable assembly in order for the system to operate effectively. See instructions for further details.

No. Pipe Freeze PRO is not designed for use in outdoor conditions.

The cable can be exposed to wetness but the thermostat must stay dry to function properly. Use Pipe Freeze PRO for pipe freeze prevention applications only.

No. It is not recommended to use Pipe Freeze Pro inside of pipes.

Consider using Heat Tape Pro inside of open drain pipes as that cable is rated for use in wet areas.

Pipe Freeze Pro’s integrated thermostat turns power on and off automatically to the cable to save electricity. The thermostat is the lump located between the power cord and the heat cable. The thermostat triggers the cable to turn on at 37ºF and off at 50ºF, with a sensitivity range of +/- 4ºF.  It’s a great feature that makes Pipe Freeze Pro unique among heat cables on the market.

Can Pipe Freeze Pro get wet?

Yes and no. The cable is approved for exposure to wet conditions but you should keep the thermostat dry for proper operation.

Does the thermostat/sensor need to be touching the Pipe?

No. The thermostat need only be exposed to cold air. It does not hurt to have the thermostat attached to the pipe but it is not necessary. If you choose to attach it to the pipe keep in mind that the thermostat should not be covered with insulation.

Should the thermostat be under the insulation?

No. You want the thermostat to react to the cold environment so it triggers the Pipe Freeze Pro to turn on.
